A Collision of Culinary Practice, Culture and Choice.
Created by Yuhui Ng-Rodriguez & Kerensa Diball
BABY CAKE is a performance project and life project whisked and folded into one; the creative development of a performance work alongside the development of a human life.
Two women are of childbearing age, acutely aware that their decision on motherhood will affect the course of their entire lives. Kerensa has decided she does not want children. Though sometimes, she wavers. Yuhui would like children. Not that she is particularly fond of them, but with her own, it’d be… different.
Baby Cake debates and meditates on motherhood (being a mother, becoming our mothers), what it means to conceive, to give birth, to have children, or not – in ways that are both universal and culture-specific.
You are invited to a night featuring floaties as a gift-hint from a mother, sweet confectionery, a sister’s prophetic dreams of a kueh lapis baby, utterances from the womb, and premonitions of slobbery and slippery watery mess. Amidst all the chaos and control, restraint and rebellion, a baby watches the performance unfold from his perch.
This project has been developed through Punctum’s Seedpod residency program and the generous support of Capital Venues and Events, Workspace, Creative Victoria, the Shire of Mount Alexander and Helen Symon.
