Wonder as you wander with your Surveyors kit and caboodle...
‘Expanding-movement-fields’ is an invitation to wonder as you wander. Artist Kaya Barry is creating a series of participatory surveying experiments in walking, traversing, and stumbling across the Castlemaine landscape.
Using a kit of rulers, levels, theodolites, compasses and cameras, she invites people to survey their movements across the pathways that influence their everyday actions.
In bringing her arts practice that uses a cross section of techniques to Castlemaine Kaya said: “Around Castlemaine the footpaths, pedestrian crossings, walking tracks and garden and bike paths are traversed every day, but we rarely consider their influence on our actions. So I’m interested in what happens when we use science to survey our everyday in Mt Alexander Shire and what art this local surveying engenders”.
Kaya Barry will run workshops of hands-on surveying activities kitting up people of all ages. Participants are invited to create their own “surveying” instruments to measure movements through public spaces. From these measured movements Kaya will create a Caboodle of an installation.
About the artist and project history:
Kaya Barry is currently based in Brisbane, but has lived all over Australia. Her art practices involve a mix of installation, performance and interactive media to examine how we move through environments. This project began in an artist residency project in rural Finland last year, where the daily walk through thick forest and farming lands inspired a new series of techniques for measuring distances on the forest walking paths. With the support of Punctum’s Seedpod residency the project will continue to develop here in Castlemaine for a series of workshops and exhibition.
This project has been developed through Punctum’s Seedpod residency program and the generous support of Capital Venues and Events, Workspace, Creative Victoria the Shire of Mount Alexander and Helen Symon.
